Obituary for George T. Quier

Joplin, Mo. George T. Quier, two days short of his 85th birthday, passed away at 7:35 a.m. Friday, June 27, 2014 at Spring River Christian Village following a short illness. George was born June 29, 1929 in Pittsburg, Ks. He was a graduate of the former Kansas State Teacher’s College, now Pittsburg State University. He began his teaching career in the Arcadia, Ks. school district. He taught Building Trades at the University of Kansas, and returned to Arcadia as the Superintendent of Schools. He received his PhD at the University of Arkansas. While in Fayetteville obtaining his degree he taught Jr. High Industrial Arts. He then served as a Professor of Secondary Education, and Industrial Arts at Northwest Mo. State University in Maryville, Mo. He then served as an Educator in Building Trades with the Trinidad State Jr. College in Trinidad, Co. and also in Silver City, New Mexico. He moved to Joplin in 1987 to be the Dean of Christian Technical School where he served three years. He retired in 1995 as Director of Buildings and Grounds at Ozark Christian College.
George was a member of the Park Plaza Christian Church. He was instrumental in designing and building the Countryside Christian Church in Maryville, Mo. as well as helping build numerous other churches throughout his lifetime. He was a 23 year member of the Naval Reserves.
George married Dorothy Clark December 25, 1950 in Walnut, Kansas and she survives. Additional survivors include a daughter, Cheri Thebeau and husband Steve, Davidson, North Carolina, a daughter in law, Terry Ward and husband Doug, Wichita, Ks., three grandchildren, Brooklin and Matthew Thebeau, and Paige Quier, and a step granddaughter, Amber Rey. He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Alan Quier, a sister, Betty Dean Sheward Slayman and a brother, Jack Quier.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday at the Park Plaza Christian Church with B.A. Austin, and Craig Woolsey, Ministers, officiating followed by cremation. Visitation will be from 4-5 p.m. Sunday at the Mortuary. Memorial contributions are requested to the American Cancer Society in care of the Mortuary. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mason-Woodard Mortuary of Joplin, Mo.
