Obituary for Norman Owens

. Norman S. Owens, age 90, of Joplin, Mo. passed away at 2:10 a.m. Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at Spring River Christian Village following a lengthy illness. Norman was born October 5, 1923 in Granby, Mo. and had lived in Joplin all his life, with the exception of a few years in Los angles, Ca. Norman and his brother in law, John Freeman, were the owners of the original Consumers Market at 32nd. and Main in Joplin. Norman served his country in the U.S. Marine Corp during WW II. Norman was selected as the Honor Man of his platoon. He was stationed in Hawaii with a group called CINPAC, which stands for Commander in Chief of the Pacific and was a guard for Admiral Chester Nimitz home in Hawaii. He was a member of the American Legion Post 13 in Joplin.
Norman was married to Carol Rand August 24, 1948 in Los Angeles, California and celebrated 66 years of marriage on Sunday. Additional survivors include four sons, Doug Owens and wife Cindy, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Greg Owens and wife Stephanie, Asheville, North Carolina, Steven Owens, Minnesota, and Jeff Owens and wife Jennifer, The Colony, Texas, one daughter, Kathy Markman, Joplin, one sister, Margaret Bull, Mesa, Arizona, eight grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.
Norman’s wishes were to be cremated. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions in his memory are requested to the Ronald McDonald House in care of the Mortuary. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mason-Woodard Mortuary of Joplin, Mo.
